Case Study: Core Failure of an IWRC Rope (including Video)

Cores of IWRC (Independent Wire Rope Core) ropes are prone to deteriorate and eventually fail without externally visible indications. The underlying failure mechanisms are described in my report titled “MRT Inspection of Crane Ropes - Possibilities and Limitations.” Please download from http://bit.ly/2tS1TEv.

In the absence of external indications, visual inspections are useless for the evaluation of core deterioration and the detection and core failures. This makes Magnetic Rope Testing (MRT) indispensable for the reliable and safe inspection if IWRC ropes.

The following case study presents the complete Nondestructive Evaluation/Examination (NDE) of an IWRC rope that was performed by the US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) using MRT equipment from NDT Technologies.
